The steam locomotives of the Q series of the Danish State Railways (DSB) are tank locomotives for shunting services.

history

In 1930, DSB purchased the Q series locomotives for the large marshalling yards in Aarhus , Fredericia and København . The locomotives were developed and built by Maschinenfabrik Frichs in Aarhus; they were designed for wet steam, i.e. without a superheater . Two series were launched: the first series 1930–32 (locomotives Q 337 – Q 341), the second series 1943–45 with slight changes such as a welded fire box made of steel, reduced heating surface and larger coal supply (locomotive Q 342 – Q 351). The locomotives were used until the early 1970s.

The preserved Q 350 locomotive

The Q350 belongs to the second series. It was built in 1945 under the Frichsfabrik number 344. It was based in Aarhus and Fredericia until it was retired in 1976. The locomotive was to be sold to England. The sale did not materialize. So the locomotive was parked in Åbenrå .

In 1980 it was sold to the Geesthacht Railway Working Group . It has been operational there since August 1981 and is used on the Bergedorf-Geesthacht railway line. The Q350 is nicknamed Karoline , derived from the advertising mascot "Karoline" (a cow) from a Danish dairy. In 2004/05 a major general inspection was carried out at MaLoWa in Klostermansfeld . The locomotive is occasionally used in film, television and advertising shoots.
