The DSER 15 and 16 were two 1C - steam locomotives , which for heavy goods traffic on the main line of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway (DSER) from Dublin to Wexford were built. The two locomotives were designed by GH Wild and built by Beyer, Peacock and Company at their Gorton Foundry in Manchester .

history

Because of the risk of damage to the new locomotives during the Irish Civil War between 1921 and 1922, the two copies were sent to Belfast for safekeeping . They were with the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) (GNRI) in Adelaide until they returned to DSER in 1923. The locomotives were retired in the early 1960s.

In 1925 the DSER became part of the Great Southern Railways and the two locomotives were re-designated as 461 and 462 and assigned as Class 461 or Class K2 .

Coloring

The locomotive, originally designed in the green of the DSER, was painted an unlined dark "battleship gray" with the takeover by Great Southern Railways (GSR) in their freight color scheme. In the late 1950s, unlined black was introduced as the general color scheme at GSR. This was also the paintwork that the locomotive with the number 461 received when it was last overhauled, together with replica cast number plates from its time at GSR.

After its restoration in 2011, the 461 in the lime green of the CIE color scheme was used again.

The 461 was preserved at the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI). 461 was in Wexford for the freight service , stationed in Waterford, where it was used before beet trains until they were retired in 1962, a year before the CIÉ the steam engine use ended. In 1977 the CIÉ handed over the locomotive to the RPSI. An extensive overhaul in Whitehead followed and the locomotive returned to service in late 1990. Currently (2011) the locomotive was undergoing a complete overhaul in the RPSI workshop in Whitehead. The 461 locomotive was seen in several movies, such as B. Michael Collins and My Mother's Ashes .
