DSL-by-call

DSL-by-Call refers to Internet-by-Call via DSL connections.

DSL-by-call tariffs on T-DSL connections

To the vast majority of DSL-by-call access to use, it requires - as with the narrowband Internet-by-call - a landline of Deutsche Telekom , since this condition required in addition to, on T-DSL -based technology DSL connection (including T-DSL resale and (a) symmetrical T-DSL business) is available. The DSL-by-call providers can use the T-DSL-ZISP , ISP-Gate and T-OC-DSL feed services that are common with T-DSL .

In contrast to Internet-by-call via narrowband access ( analog modem or ISDN ) or call-by-call , DSL-by-call can not be used without registration because the DSL connections are not switched over the telephone network and the DSL -by-call provider the number of the connection from which the connection is made remains unknown. In order to be able to bill the connection, the customer receives an individual PPPoE user ID when registering . Instead of using the dial-in number, as is customary with Internet-by-Call via narrowband access, the provider is identified by the Telekom RADIUS server using a prefix and / or suffix in the PPPoE user ID for DSL-by-Call .

In the age of the relatively cheap DSL flat rate tariffs, DSL-by-call access is usually only worthwhile for normal private users for cost reasons if the Internet is used sporadically. The actual main advantage of the DSL-by-call mechanism, however, is the possibility of using providers with special services that are not included in the normal product portfolio of the T-DSL / T-Online offer. So z. For example, some providers offer the option of assigning static IP addresses (e.g. for the operation of server services behind a DSL line - in this case the forced 24-hour disconnection of DSL access has less of an effect). There are also special tariffs for multi-user or company use (mostly in connection with volume-based billing). For a few years now, some providers have also offered the option of native use of IPv6 over the existing DSL line.

Classic DSL-by-call tariffs

DSL-by-call tariffs are normal DSL tariffs, whereby no basic fee is incurred and is billed either according to the data volume or the usage time. Some tariffs also include a monthly free volume (100 MB up to approx. 1 GB are usual). However, increased volume often leads to high costs. Common are z. B. 2.5 ct per megabyte, so an impressive 25 euros per gigabyte. Compared to flat rate offers, these costs are unreasonably high. This is probably one of the reasons for the triumphant advance of the flat rate.

DSL-by-call tariffs with automatic flat rate

For a long time there were no adequate offers for infrequent users with the security need not to fall into a cost trap. On the one hand, a flat rate is not used, with “byCall” tariffs there is a risk of cost traps. DSL-by-call tariffs with a maximum price guarantee (so-called FlatbyCall offers) are ideal for this user group. In the case of very intensive use, the tariff automatically changes to a flat rate, which means that additional use does not lead to any additional costs.

DSL-by-Call without an additional basic DSL connection fee on telephone connections from alternative landline providers

Providers who set up their DSL connection via the unbundled subscriber line and who consequently do not have to pay an additional monthly fee to Telekom for the DSL connection also offer consumers DSL access that is partially billed using the DSL-by-call method where no additional basic fee has to be paid for the DSL connection compared to a pure telephone connection without a DSL connection ( e.g. Arcor and Versatel ). However, only the bundled provider-specific DSL-by-call tariff can be used on these connections.
