Dad sneakers , [ˈdæd ˈsniːkɚ] (English "dad", colloquially for 'father') also known as ugly sneakers, chunky sneakers or turbo trainers, are sneakers that are characterized by their bulky appearance and disproportionately large shape.

Mesh, nylon and net, as well as a several centimeter thick sole are the distinguishing features of the sneaker. The shoe trend is particularly widespread in Europe, as well as in the US coastal cities.

1990s

The first dad sneakers were mainly worn by American fathers in the 1990s. Back then, the focus was on the comfort of the shoe. The New Balance 624 was one of the most popular models. It has EVA footbed cushioning and an IMEVA midsole, which makes the sneaker suitable for leisure activities.

In 1995, Princess Diana wore a dad sneaker, but despite her popularity, she was unable to continue the trend.

In 1996, Adidas launched the Ozweego. This was designed as a running shoe because of its lightness and should be used both during training and competitions. Four more models followed. The dad sneaker gained in popularity, but a trend has not yet caught on.

2010s

In January 2013, Adidas brought out a reinterpretation of the Ozweego. It was designed by Raf Simons . The shoe was first seen in January 2013 at the Paris Fashion Week in three different color variants and was finally available worldwide from July 2013.

In 2017, Balenciaga succeeded in spreading the shoe trend again with the Triple S. It was first seen in the men's collection for autumn. The chunky sneaker came on the market in various colors for around $ 700. The price ultimately rose to $ 900. What is striking about the Triple S is the three-part sole, which, with its height of 6.5 cm, includes parts from basketball shoes, running shoes and track shoes. The "S" in Triple S therefore stands for the sole. To this day, the Triple S is the most popular dad sneaker. The limited edition and the high price make the Triple S a popular status symbol. It was initially made in Italy until Balenciaga moved production to China in 2018.

A large number of models and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian , Gigi Hadid and Jaden Smith have been wearing the dad sneaker in various designs since then and show the trend in their social media accounts.

Dad sneakers and social media

The number of hashtags for “dadshoe” on social media shows that luxury brands and classic sports brands dominate the dad sneaker market. Balenciaga , Nike , Adidas and Gucci are the most popular brands. More than 2/3 of all mentions are from male users. Furthermore, it can be noted that the age group from 18 to 24 years is most represented. From January 2017 to August 2018, search queries for dad sneakers on social media platforms rose by 152%.
