Daisetsu-zan

Daisetsu-zan ( Japanese 大雪山 ) is the central highlands of Hokkaidō , the northernmost main island of Japan . The Asahi-dake (2291 m) is also the highest mountain Hokkaido. Most of the area is occupied by the Daisetsuzan National Park of the same name , which is also the largest national park in Japan. The mountain was also named a special natural monument on March 15, 1977 .

The upper reaches of the Ishikari-gawa ( 石 狩 川 ) and Chūbetsu-gawa ( 忠 別 川 ) rivers are also in the area .

The landscape is of volcanic origin. The last eruption on Stratovolcano Asahi-dake was held 1739th Fumaroles still bear witness to the volcanic activity of the area today.

The vegetation ranges from mixed forest to coniferous forests to alpine tundra above the tree line.
