Ir haKarmel ("Carmel City"; Hebrew עִיר הַכַּרְמֶל, Ir haCarmel ; Arabic مدينة الكرمل Madinat al-Karmel ; English Carmel City ) was a city mainly inhabited by Druze on the Carmel Mountains in northern Israel . It was founded in 2003 through the merger of the two villages ( Hebrew דאליית אל-כרמל Daliyat al-Karmil ; Arabic دالية الكرمل, DMG Dāliyat al-Karmal ) and ( Hebrew עספיא Isfija ; Arabic عسفيا, DMG ʿIsfiyā ) under the name "Dalijat al-Karmil-Isfija". The city was given the name Ir haKarmel in 2005. In 2008 the merger was reversed and the city was dissolved again.
With 13,000 inhabitants, compared to 12,000 in Isfija, Daliyat al-Karmil was the slightly larger of the two districts.
In Isfija there were 80% Druze Muslim, Christian and Jewish minorities.
From the 17th century there were more than ten Druze villages in the Carmel area, but they were destroyed in a rebellion at the beginning of the 19th century . It was not until a few decades later that the Druze were able to return and repopulate the two villages that exist today.
Tourists went to Ir haKarmel mainly to get an impression of the Druze religion and culture and to visit the bazaar.
Just a few kilometers south of the village is Muhraqa, one of the two Christian Carmelite monasteries on Mount Carmel.
