Damaru (born July 2, 1986 in Paramaribo as Dino Orpheo Canterburg ) is a Surinamese reggae singer and rapper .

Career
Damaru was born and raised in the Latour district of the capital Paramaribo of the former Dutch colony of Suriname. He started rapping when he was 13, his stage name being composed of D for his first name Dino and Amaru, the middle name of his idol 2Pac . He sang in bands like the Lava Boys and the New Jack Boys before becoming a solo singer.
His hits include Yu Na Mi Engel ( Sranan Tongo for: You are my angel), Hey Baby and Sranang Koningin (Surinamese queen). His greatest success in 2007 was the song Mi Rowsu (My Rose), which Damaru dedicated to his daughter Denoura. It was at the top of the charts in its home country for nine weeks. The following year he also made a film called Mi Rowsu - The Movie .
In February 2009 he went to the Netherlands and tried to gain a foothold there. He toured the country for three months, appeared on television and finally got a contract with the most important Dutch hip-hop label TopNotch . His version of Mi Rowsu came out in June of that year and made it into the Nederlandse Top 40 in July . A new version was then recorded with the successful singer Jan Smit , which rose to number 1 on the charts within two weeks of its release and made the song the summer hit of the year.
