Damas Gratis (also Dama $ Grati $ ) are a cumbia band from Argentina , which is one of the most successful groups in the sub-genre of Cumbia Villera (slum cumbia).

Their music consists of intricate cumbia rhythms underlined by synthesizer sounds. The lyrics deal with the milieu of the slums in Argentina and thus partly with crime, but no glorification of violence is carried out, even if the band has been accused of this by some circles.

Band history

The band was founded in 2000 by Pablo Lescano , a young keyboardist from the slum Villa La Esperanza in Buenos Aires . Her debut album Para los Pibes was very successful commercially and made the sound of the so-called Cumbia Villera (slum-cumbia) known beyond the borders of Argentina.

In 2001 the follow-up album Operación Damas Gratis was released , in which the band integrated influences from reggae , dancehall and psychedelic rock into their music. After that, the band got a little quieter.
