Shiki1 class steam railcar

The steam railcars of the Shiki class or Sigeu class (Japanese シ 시그, Korean 시그) were steam railcars of the Chosen Government Railway ( Sentetsu ). There were two different variants of this class made in Japan and England .

history

Shiki1 class (シ キ 1)

Kisha Seizō in Japan built four steam railcars for Sentetsu in 1923. In principle, it was a small steam locomotive with a 2-2-0 (1A) wheel arrangement that was attached to one end of a bogie passenger car. The steam railcar could pull two more passenger cars and was intended for use in commuter traffic on the Gyeonginseon from Seoul to Incheon . However, the performance was not satisfactory and there were many complaints about uncomfortable vibrations. Therefore, in 1924, after less than a year, one of the steam railcars was scrapped and the other two were converted into 2-2-0 tank locomotives by removing the passenger compartment. One of these locomotives was scrapped in 1927, leaving only two locomotives that operated until at least 1940.

Shiki2 class (シ キ 2)

Despite the bad experience with the Japanese steam railcars Sentetsu imported two geared steam railcars from Sentinel - Cammell in England in 1929 with a self-supporting lightweight structure made of steel. The steam railcars had a vertical superheated steam boiler at 2.1 MPa (21.0 kgf / cm²) pressure and a horizontally mounted six-cylinder drive producing 30 horsepower.

This construction method later proved to be very helpful in the construction of the first petrol rail buses of the Sentetsu Geha class and the Nakeha2 class . Both vehicles remained in service until at least 1940.
