Nakeha-class rail buses

The rail buses Nakeha class were (Japaneseナゲハ, Korean 혀 게하) with gasoline engines driven 3rd grade narrow gauge - railbuses the Chosen Government Railway ( Sentetsu ) with a track width of 762 mm (2 feet 6 inches ). There were two different types of this class made in Japan and Korea .

history

The first petrol rail buses in Korea belonged to the narrow-gauge Naheka class and the standard-gauge Keha 1 and Keha 2 classes , which were put into operation in 1930.

Nakeha1 class

When in 1925 some of the urban and rural local rail transport began to shift to the road, Sentetsu decided to use internal combustion engine rail buses that had already proven themselves abroad.

The first petrol rail buses in Korea were built in 1928 for third-class local traffic on the narrow-gauge Donghae-Jungbu railway line from Daegu to Gyeongju , which has since become part of the Daegu railway line and the Jungang railway line . These rail buses belonged to the Nakeha1 class.

They were manufactured in Japan by Nippon Sharyo , had 30 passengers and were powered by a 33 hp Ford petrol engine. A total of seven were built in 1928 and 1929, and they did exceptionally well in suburban traffic because of their locomotive-pulled trains.

Nakeha2 class (ナ ゲ ハ 2)

Based on the positive experience with the Nakeha1 class and the standard gauge steam railcars of the Shiki2 class (シ キ 2) manufactured by Sentinel - Cammell in England , Sentetsu constructed the rail buses of the Nakeha2 class in-house. They were powered by a 62 hp 6 KU six cylinder gasoline engine made by the Waukesha Motor Company , which was imported from the USA . They each offered space for 45 third-class passengers.

Originally they were numbered 11 to 16, but in 1938 they were renumbered from ナ ゲ ハ 2-1 to ナ ゲ ハ 2-6. In total, the Gyeongseong Works built six rail buses, the first four of which were delivered to Sentetsu in 1930, followed by two more in 1931.

Korean National Railroad

After Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, all 13 rail buses of this class remained in South Korea. They were eventually operated by the Korean National Railroad . They were taken out of service in 1965 and replaced by narrow-gauge diesel-hydraulic rail buses.
