Gwangbokjeol ( 조국 해방 의 날 Chogukhaebang'ŭi nal in North Korea) is a national holiday that takes place annually in North and South Korea to commemorate independence from Japan on August 15, 1945. Before that, both states were part of the Japanese Empire under the provincial name Chosen . This holiday is also celebrated by both states on August 15, although Japan held de facto administrative sovereignty for all of Korea at least in the south until September 12, 1945 and de jure until the entry into force of the San Francisco Peace Treaty on April 28, 1952.
In South Korea, the beginning of the republic in 1948 is also commemorated on this day.
