Dana James Boente (born February 7, 1954 in Carlinville , Illinois ) is an American lawyer and United States Attorney of the Eastern Judicial District of Virginia (ED Va.). From January 30 to February 9, 2017, he was Acting United States Attorney General in the Trump administration .

Life

Boente was born in 1954 to James and Doris Boente in Carlinville, Illinois. He studied business administration at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis and graduated in 1977 with an MBA . He then attended the private law school of Saint Louis University ( SLU LAW ), where he did his Juris Doctor in 1982 .

After graduation, he returned to Illinois, where he worked for James Waldo Ackerman , a federal judge at the federal district court for the central district of Illinois. In 1984 he moved to the Tax Fraud Department and in 2001 he became Assistant US Attorney in the Fraud Prevention Unit of the Eastern District of Virginia (ED Va.).

In December 2012, Boente was appointed Interim US Attorney for the Eastern Federal Judicial District of Louisiana by US Attorney General Eric Holder . He completed this task until September 2013. In the same month he was appointed Assistant US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (ED Va.). After his nomination by the then US President Barack Obama on October 8, 2015, he finally took over the office of 60th US Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia on December 15, 2015 as the successor to Neil MacBride .

On January 30, 2017, Dana Boente was appointed acting attorney general of the United States by US President Donald Trump after the previous incumbent Sally Yates had previously been dismissed by Trump.

Boente was to temporarily take over the leadership of the Justice Department until Justice Minister-designate Jeff Sessions could take office.
