Ruin of Danby Castle

Danby Castle is a ruined castle about 1.8 km southeast of the village of Danby in the English administrative division of North Yorkshire .

The castle ruin is in a dominant position on the slopes of Danby Rigg that face away . The fort was built in 1301 and 1302 for William Latimer as a sign of his wealth and was at the same time an architectural pioneer, as it combined a willingness to defend and living comfort.

In the 16th century additions and changes were made. Catherine Parr, who would later become King Henry VIII's 6th wife , lived there for some time.

The castle ruins are now rented out for weddings; part of the building is a farmhouse where the owner of the property lives. Danby Court Leet , an all-male court that was originally responsible for the entire manorial estate, but is now only entrusted with the administration of the common land, meets regularly in the courtroom of the castle.
