The Dancehall Rock or Dance Hall Rock is a rock formation in the south of the state of Utah .

geology

The monolith consists of reddish sandstone of the Wingate Formation and reaches a height of 1438 meters, it rises about 30 meters above the surrounding plateau.

history

During the San Juan expedition of 1879/1880, the settlers waited at Fortymile Spring, about a mile away, for the scouts sent to return to explore what is now the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail . The special acoustics of the rock, interspersed with a large alcove and countless holes, meant that it was used by the settlers for their leisure activities, especially line dances .

Due to its prominence, it later served as a landmark along the dirt road.

tourism

Today, Dancehall Rock is one of the most visited attractions of the part of the Grand-Staircase-Escalante National Monument known as the Canyons of the Escalante , as it is easily accessible. It is possible to climb the mountain on the side facing away from the parking lot.
