Daniel Gile

Daniel Gile (* 1948 ) is a French translator and conference interpreter. He teaches as a university professor at the École Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) at the University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle .

Life

Daniel Gile studied mathematics before turning to a degree in translation and interpreting. In 1984 he received his doctorate in Japanese with a dissertation on the training of translation professions ( La formation aux métiers de la traduction japonais-français :problemèmes et méthodes ) at the Paris Institute national des langues et civilizations orientales (INALCO). In 1987 he began an extraordinary professorship there. The doctorate in linguistics followed in 1989; In his dissertation La communication linguistique en réunion multilingue: les difficultés de la transmission informationelle en interprétation simultanée , he dealt with the difficulties of transmitting information during simultaneous interpreting. In 1993 he taught in Belgium at the Catholic University of Leuven and from 1995 to 2007 he taught interpreting at the University of Lyon 2 , and then at the École Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) of the University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle . From 2008 to 2011 he was also a visiting professor at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China. He also holds an honorary professorship at the Shanghai Foreign Language University and is an honorary member of the Japan Association for Interpretation Studies .

Daniel Giles research combines scientific and humanities approaches, and it has shaped the training of interpreters and young academics worldwide.

An important focus of his research are the cognitive processes in conference interpreting. In his effort model , Gile describes the distribution of cognitive capacity among various actions ( efforts ) that the interpreter carries out from listening to the production of the target speech.

Gile has authored fundamental works on translation and interpreting and numerous articles. In his CIRIN Bulletin , which appears twice a year, he gives an overview of the latest publications in the field of interpreting.
