Daniel Stylites

Daniel Stylites (Greek: Ὁ Δανιὴλ ὁ Στυλίτης; * around 409 in Maratha near Samosata in Syria ; † December 11, 493 in Anaplus near Constantinople ) was a columnist and was canonized .

His feast day is December 11th.

As a pupil of the Symeon Stylites the Elder , Daniel was introduced to the columnist system. At the age of 47 he erected a pillar in Anaplus near Constantinople . At the request of Emperor Leo I , Daniel was ordained a priest against his will . He spent over 30 years on his pillar, which he only left once during this time to participate in church political battles. He was buried at the foot of his pillar.
