Danum Eagles Basketball Club is an English basketball club from Doncaster . In addition to youth teams as of 2013, the club also has a women's team that competes in the second English division. The origins of the club go back to the Doncaster Panthers , which were founded in 1954 and whose men's team played in the national basketball league (NBL) between 1973 and 1985 . In this league, the men's team reached the double of championship and cup. The men's team of the Eagles joined the British Basketball League (BBL) in 1993 , which as a closed league now formed the highest national league. In the BBL, the men's team of the Eagles traded as the Panthers, before they retired after three years in 1996 and played in the lower division of the NBL until 2001. Since then, only the women's team has remained in the senior sector. The club name Danum Eagles is based on the Danum Academy , which in turn derives its name from the old Roman name Danum for the city of Doncaster.

history

The Doncaster Panthers were founded in 1954 on the initiative of Morris Wordsworth and initially played in the sports hall of Balby High School. In 1965 a women's team was formed. The men's team achieved promotion to the top division NBL in 1973, which had been founded a year earlier. Here the team initially traded as Wilson Panthers and played in the "Adwick Leisure Center". Later they also played in Sheffield in the "Concord Sports Center". Under the new name Team Ziebart , they won the championship and the English cup in 1979. The cup final was reached in the following two years as John Carr Panthers , without being able to win it again. After taking part in the Korać Cup 1975/76 , they were also qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1979 and 1980, where they were eliminated before reaching the group stage. After they were eliminated in the first round in 1979 as well as in the Korać Cup in 1975, they reached the round of 16 by bye in 1980, in which they were eliminated against the French representative SCM Le Mans . In 1985 the Panthers stopped playing.

In 1989 the Eagles achieved promotion to the second English division and immediately afterwards the march through to the first division. After the foundation of the BBL as a closed league in 1987 by the best clubs of the previous NBL, this was no longer the top national league. In 1992 they renamed themselves in cooperation with Morris Wordsworth in Panthers and applied for admission to the BBL, which was granted a year later. Here the men's team played in the "Dome Leisure Center" in Doncaster and stayed in this league for only three years before they retired. Best place in 1995 was a fifth place after the regular season. In 2000, the men's team once again achieved promotion to the second division of the NBL before the club withdrew its men's team completely from play.

In addition to the women's team, the association also actively works with young people. The former Panthers had already won the national cup competition for youth teams in 1972 and 1975. In 2006 a school team from the Danum Academy won the English championships.
