The Danzig Talks are an international security conference that has taken place annually since 2000, organized in cooperation between the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Criminal Police Office and the Pomeranian Voivodeship Office .

history

The first conference in 2000 was preceded by a symposium in Białystok (Poland), at which the desire for greater cooperation between the Central and Eastern European countries became clear. Based on this idea, the first Gdańsk Talks were launched as an initially one-off security conference. The need for a regular exchange on questions of internal security and the promotion of cross-border cooperation led to the further development of the Danzig Talks into an annual conference cycle . Organized in cooperation between the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Criminal Police Office and the Pomeranian Voivodeship Office, the conference initially only took place in Poland until 2008, and since then has alternated between Germany and the Republic of Poland.

Thematically, the conference deals with current security-relevant concerns of the participating states. As aspects of the common fight against terrorism , drug crime , economic crime and corruption , as well as the use of new technologies, the security at major events and issues of migration, always in terms of internal security in Europe.

Over the years it has developed into an important forum for international cooperation. Among the speakers and in the auditorium are numerous executives and experts from the police, politics, business and justice from Germany and Poland, but also from countries of the European Union and the USA.

Basic idea

The overarching goal of the conference is to preserve Europe as a single area of freedom, security and justice. For this purpose, the idea of Europe is taken up as a space that extends beyond the individual national borders. On the basis of this, the cooperation of the states and their security authorities, in particular the Baltic Sea states, is promoted, which are linked by dynamic and already proven forms of cooperation. In order to achieve this, coordinated action on security issues and the development of future security strategies, both regionally and Europe-wide, are sought.

The initial aim of the conference was to bring the Central and Eastern European states to uniform police standards with a view to the 5th EU enlargement in 2004 and thus to smooth the transition into the European Union for the new member states. Over the years this has turned into a dialogue that has developed beyond the purely police level into an intensive exchange on questions of internal security in Europe, especially in the Baltic region.

The range of conference topics, for example security at major events, in the digital age, tourism and the energy sector or public-private partnerships to ensure internal security, brings with it a wide variety of representatives from the police, administration, justice, politics, and non-governmental organizations, but also every year Science, business and media together. The topic-specific situation is discussed jointly on the basis of specialist lectures and discussions.

The nature of the partnership between the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Criminal Police Office and the Pomeranian Voivodeship Office is particularly interesting. On the part of the LKA MV, the issues are primarily dealt with from a police perspective. The Pomeranian Voivodeship Office primarily deals with the aspect of hazard prevention and disaster control. Conference participants from other EU countries, often also from the USA, also enable a look beyond what is known as the bigger picture and offer a platform for new, interesting approaches.
