The Dapediidae are an extinct family of bony fish (Osteichthyes). They lived in the sea and in freshwater from the Middle Triassic to the Upper Jurassic .

features

The fish were usually medium-sized with a maximum length of 45 cm. They are high back and strongly flattened on the sides, in some species the head and trunk are almost circular, others are highly spindle-shaped. The back and anal fin were long. A row of infraorbitalia and a row of suborbitalia together formed the bones of the eye ring. The vertical section of the preoperculars was partially covered by the suborbitalia. A gular plate was available.

Systematics

The Dapediidae family was introduced in 1966 by the German paleontologist Ulrich Lehmann and assigned to the Semionotiformes . In 2015, Thiesa and Waschkewitz introduced the monotypical order Dapediiformes for the family and assigned it to the gingymodes (kinship of the pike ) within the subclass of the bone organoids (Holostei). Other scientists place them in the Halecomorphi (relationship of the bald pike ) or see the Dapediidae as the sister group of a clade of Ginglymodi and Halecomorphi.
