Darcin is the new name for MUP24 ( major urinary protein 24), a protein of the lipocalin family in rodents , which has been shown to be not only the pheromone-active (S) -2-sec-butyl-4, 5-Dihydro-Thiazole (SBT) binds, but that itself is effective as a pheromone.

Darcin is formed in the liver, filtered through the kidney into the urine and not reabsorbed. In wild mice only the males have darcin, in domesticated and inbred C57Bl / 6 mice darcin was also found in the female urine.

The MUP gene locus shows 21 or 9 genes in mice and rats, 3 genes in horses and 2 genes in lemurs, 1 gene in other species: orangutans, chimpanzees, macaques, dogs or pigs and only one pseudogene in humans. Therefore, darcin in humans can be excluded.
