history

Darren Wharton 2011

In 1985, former ThinLizzy keyboarder Darren Wharton and Vinny Burns ( Ultravox , Ten, Asia ), an exceptional guitarist, formed the band in Oldham (Great Britain). Drummer Ed Stratton was replaced by James Ross a few months after the band was formed. After signing a record deal with A&M , they worked directly on a debut album Out of the Silence , which was released in 1988. After the band made a name for themselves with their debut, they were hired as tour support for Europe , Jimmy Page and Gary Moore . Despite the success, James Ross separates from the band. In order to record the new CD, a new drummer had to be found: Greg Morgan. Nigel Clutterbuck joined as the new bass player. The second album Blood from a Stone was released in 1991. Despite fans, the band had no luck and they split up and as a result lost their record deal with A&M.

Darren Wharton revived the band with a different line-up (Martin Wilding, bass; Richard Dews and Andy Moore, guitar) in 1998 and unexpectedly released a new album Calm Before the Storm under MTM Music (Munich) . Wharton worked again on a new album, whereupon there was another change of musicians: Wilding is replaced by Brian Drawbridge, and the two brothers Simon Gardner, keyboards, and Julian Gardner, drums. Belief , which corresponds to the style of Melodic Rock , was released in autumn 2001. In 2002 the band toured Europe, this was released in 2005 with The Power of Nature ... Live in Munich . In 2004 the new CD Beneath the Shining Water was released . On this album Andy Moore supported with guitar, there was a change on drums: Gavin Mart. Arc of the Dawn was released in 2009 . Vinny Burns, Richie Dews and Kevin Whitehead have been back since 2009. In 2012 the album Calm Before the Storm 2 was released. The current album Sacred Ground was released in July 2016 and presented for the first time live at the Bang your Head Festival in Balingen on the day of release on July 14, 2016 with the theme song Home , among other things . On July 15, 2016, the album was already number 1 among Amazon's bestsellers.

style

All discs are guitar-heavy throughout, the strong, slightly smoky voice of Wharton sometimes makes the gritty sound of Dare. On the Belief CD , some tracks are accompanied by typical Irish sounds through violin, whistle and pipe : The first track Silent Thunder : The intro is performed with a tin whistle and in the finale violins are used, in the second track Dreams on Fire again tin whistle in the whole piece, track six We were Friends alternates between pipe and electric guitar in the intro, whereby you can hear Mike Oldfield's style when playing the intro. It is the only disc that contains these elements.

particularities

MTM Music was a German label based in Munich, the company was liquidated in 2008, only two studio albums of the band were released under this label: Calm Before the Storm and The Power of Nature ... Live in Munich .
