In 1998, Cox received a PhD in High Energy Physics from Manchester University. His doctoral thesis builds on his work on the H1 experiment at the HERA particle accelerator at the DESY research facility in Hamburg.

He is a member of the particle physics group at the University of Manchester and works on the ATLAS experiment of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN near Geneva , Switzerland . He is also working on the international FP420 R&D project to further develop the ATLAS and CMS experiment.
