The Dartford Cable Tunnel is a tunnel under the River Thames between Littlebrook Power Station in Dartford and Thurrock . The 2.4 kilometer long, three meter diameter tunnel was built between 2003 and 2004 to carry a 400 kV National Grid power line under the river. Each phase of the line consists of an XLPE-insulated high-voltage cable with a diameter of 150 mm. The line replaces an oil-insulated 275 kV line that has reached the end of its useful life and was installed under the carriageway in the Dartford road tunnel , and increases the power supply. The installation was carried out by ABB . The tunnel is accessible, but not open to the public.
