Darwinilus is a beetle from the family of Rove , the holotype of Charles Darwin in September 1832 during his voyage of the HMS Beagle in Bahía Blanca was collected (Argentina). Scientifically described was darwinilus just over 180 years later after the rediscovery of the collected specimen from Darwin in the Natural History Museum in London. The only other known specimen of the species is in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and originally comes from Río Cuarto (Argentina). The species is named after Charles Darwin and the writer David Sedaris .

description

Darwinilus sedarisi is large and vigorous for a short-winged species. The known specimens are about two centimeters long. The head and pronotum are metallic-green with purple-blue edges, the elytra , mouthparts, legs and the belly are brown. The head is hexagonal and has large bristles on the top along the side edges. The eyes are medium-sized and point a little forward. The antennae are serrated and have eleven segments, the first of which have one to three larger, the other smaller yellow bristles.

Way of life

Nothing is known about the way of life of Darwinilus sedarisi . The fact that no more specimens of such a large beetle are known could indicate a hidden way of life. A number of related species live in the burrows of ants and other hymenoptera . Since a large part of the area between the two well-known localities Bahía Blanca and Río Cuarto is used for agriculture today, it is unclear whether the species still has a suitable habitat today or whether it is perhaps extinct.
