The secret of the hidden island
The Secret of the Hidden Island (English original edition Monster Mission (1999) and Island of the Aunts (2000)) is a children's book by the author Eva Ibbotson .
The English-language edition was in November 2000 under the title Island of the Aunts "Best Book of 2000" of the School Library Journal . The book was published in February 2001 in a German translation by Sabine Ludwig by Cecilie Dressler Verlag and in 2003 under license as an unabridged paperback edition by Deutsches Taschenbuch Verlag . In 2003 it was released as a sound carrier in a radio play adaptation by Katrin Wenzel, directed by Christoph Dietrich from Igel-Records . The narrator was Peter Fricke , the music was composed by Henrik Albrecht , the speakers were Rosemarie Fendel , Wolfgang Spier , Ulrich Pleitgen and Jürgen Hentsch , among others . Igel-Records published the radio play again in 2009 in the series The most beautiful radio plays for children . It was also released as a DAISY audio book in the library for visually impaired and blind people .

The three old aunts Etta, Coral and Myrtle, who live on a secret island, look after mythical creatures who have fled to them or stranded on the island because of environmental disasters . Since the work is getting too much, the aunts kidnap three children so that they can help them on the island with the many animals. The three “chosen ones” are called Fabio, Minette and Lambert. Minette and Fabio like it on the island at first sight, because there are mermaids there and they love the sound of the sea. But Lambert, the spoiled millionaire's son, turns out to be a total mistake, because he doesn't want to help and wants to go back to his father. He soon puts the island and its inhabitants in very great danger by bringing his father to the island. He promises a business and wants to bring the mythical creatures to London. The Great Octopus prevents this by sinking Lambert's father's ship. The people and mythical creatures will be saved. The aunts are brought to justice for kidnapping the children, but acquitted because of the statements made by Fabio and Minette. They leave the island to the two children in their wills so that they can continue their work.

The Deister- und Weserzeitung described the radio play version as a fascinating “mixture of detective radio play and eco-thriller”, the audio book magazine EchtRadio.de “a very nice story about the wonders of nature and its preservation, about responsibility and friendship”. Cornelia Funke took up the recommendation of the book edition on her website under “Book tips from you for you”.
