history
Moldovița Monastery was founded in 1532 by Prince Petru Rareș , the illegitimate son of Ștefan cel Mare . Alexandru cel Bun (1400–1432) built it on the site of a former old stone church. The old church was destroyed in the early 16th century due to rainfall and landslides.
The monastery is built in the style of Moldovan Gothic architecture, which combines Gothic and Byzantine elements. It is a Romanian Orthodox monastery.
The Moldovița frescoes were completed by Toma von Suceava in 1537. Toma Suceava's paintings are in the Italian Renaissance style (with humanized characters).
It belongs to the UNESCO - World Heritage Site .
The last judgment in art
The frescoes in the monasteries of northern Moldavia stand out from the other areas of the former Byzantine Empire due to their particular complexity. The Moldovan works were also a model for the art of Mount Athos.
The oldest image of the Last Judgment is from the 7th century AD. It is described in the Christian Topography of Cosmas Indicopleustes, the manuscript of which is in the Vatican Library. The first known fresco of the last judgment in 1075 is in the church of Sant'Angelo in Formis near Naples. The oldest mosaic on this subject is in Venice, in the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello . It probably dates from the twelfth century.
