Sant'Angelo in Formis
Sant'Angelo in Formis is a pre-Romanesque Benedictine abbey in Sant'Angelo in Formis , a district of Capua . The church contains one of the best-preserved Romanesque fresco cycles.
description
The church was built in the 6th century on the remains of a Roman Temple of Diana ( Tempio di Diana Tifatina ) and was renovated several times in the following centuries while basically maintaining the original shape. The facade dates from the 12th century. The portico has five arches , the middle one ( portal ) is made of white marble .
The interior of the church, which Abbot Desiderius had carried out by Byzantine artists around 1080, is significant . One of the most detailed and best-preserved Romanesque fresco cycles with scenes from the Old and New Testament and two depictions of a Majestas Domini extends over the walls of the nave and apse . The Majestas Domini in the apse is particularly interesting because Byzantine, Roman-early Christian and Carolingian representations were combined with one another. Christ does not appear in the mandorla , but sits on a throne, which may be based on Roman-early Christian motifs. The combination of the Majestas Domini with the four evangelist symbols , which in turn probably refers to Carolingian models, is atypical for the Byzantine traditions .
