Flying men in daredevil boxes ( English Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines ) is an animated series by Hanna-Barbera from 1969. The series is an offshoot of the series Wacky Races from 1968.

content

The villain duo Fliegbert von Sichthofen and Meutrich , flying aces from the First World War , was taken over from Wacky Races . You are the leaders of the Vulture Squadron , a group of pilots whose job it is to stop the carrier pigeon Yankee Doodle Pigeon from giving vital information to the enemy. Each half hour episode consists of two stories and some gags and Meutrichs daydreams between the two parts.

Members of the Vulture Squadron are:

  • Fliegbert von Sichthofen ( Dick Dastardly ): Ex-Wacky Race driver who mutated into a pilot and leader of the group.
  • Meutrich (Engl. Muttley ): Fliegbert's Sidekick . His nasty laugh is typical of him and made the dog world famous (later offshoot as the criminal dog Murmel, please come , The Mumbly Cartoon Show ).
  • Otto (Engl. Zilly ): The fearful rabbit of the group.
  • Einstein (Engl. Klunk ): chief mechanic and designer.

Other figures:

  • Yankee Doodle Pigeon: A patriotic American pigeon that tries to escape the Vulture Squadron with a bag full of letters .
  • The general: head of the entire gang and a figure that the audience never gets to see.
  • Meutrich's girlfriend: You can only see her often in Meutrich's daydream scenes.

Production and publication

Under the direction of Joseph Barbera and William Hanna , the Hanna-Barbera-Studio produced the 35-part series as Saturday morning cartoon from 1969 to 1971 . The music was composed by Hoyt S. Curtin. The series was broadcast from September 13, 1969 to September 4, 1971 by the broadcaster CBS in the United States. The series was initially released on VHS, and in 2006 on DVD.

Flying men in daring boxes has been translated into Finnish, French, Italian and Japanese, among others, as well as into ten other languages. In Germany , the series was shown for the first time from July 28 to August 21, 1995 by RTL II . Several episodes were cut together so that only 16 episodes could be seen. Repeats followed later with K-Toon , Junior and Boomerang .

Comic versions

In the 1970s, the series was also produced in a comic book version. However, the two main characters have been renamed Doppel and Decker .

Since 2017 there is a new comic from the publisher DC, which puts the two main characters (Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Atcherly and Captain Dudley “Mutt” Muller) into a more realistic world (they fly an F-15), but then but again brings cartoon elements.
