The database information system ( DBIS ) is a service that records scientific databases. Both free databases and those that have to be licensed for a particular library or region are recorded. In February 2018, over 12,000 databases were recorded in DBIS. In addition to stocks on CD-ROM and DVD, DBIS records primarily online offers, of which over 5000 can be used freely on the Internet.
DBIS is developed and maintained at the Regensburg University Library . Currently, 323 academic libraries participate in the service and offer their users access to databases via DBIS. You maintain the database together.
history
The database information system was set up in 2002 at the Regensburg University Library. The service was originally created within the project “Virtual Library Bavaria”, which was funded with state funds. The model was the electronic journal library , which has been developed and maintained in the same company since 1997. By August 2004, DBIS had been used in 24 libraries; in 2006 there were already 91.
The project was subsequently funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The access to the database information system increased steadily. While almost 2 million hits were recorded in 2005, in 2009 there were already a good 8 million hits.
service
Although the database is managed jointly by all libraries that participate in DBIS, local adjustments to the user interface are possible. In the respective library, the user has an interface available from which he can see which access restrictions may exist at his location for a specific database. The output can be localized in the settings.
In addition, the query can be restricted to freely accessible, locally licensed, fee-based databases or to those offers that are available throughout Germany under a national license . The search results can also be sorted by subject. With the advanced search it is possible to search the stock for key words or to restrict the result to offers from a certain region or to a certain database type (e.g. for essays, university papers, pictures and the like).
In-depth bibliographical information is available for each database.
The database information system is barrier-free .
DBIS is also integrated in the specialist portals and virtual specialist libraries that were developed in the Vascoda network.
