Daugmale is a place in the Latvian district Ķekavas novads . It is located on the left bank of the Daugava , which today is dammed a little downstream for the Riga hydropower plant (Rīgas HES) and flows into the Baltic Sea in Riga .
history
The river was one of the most important routes for the Vikings on their way to the Black Sea and Byzantium . There are numerous fortifications on the river from different periods of prehistory and from early historical times.
One of the most important was Daugmale, a fortification and settlement of the Viking Age (800-1050 AD), located just outside the modern city of Riga. Excavations have produced a wealth of material. In the 11th and 12th centuries the place was a center of amber processing , where cross pendants were also made. The place is important for Nordic research, in 1937 the only object in Latvia with a runic inscription was unearthed. The layer in which this fragment of a club head was found dates back to the 9th century and contained numerous Scandinavian elements. The diameter was about eight centimeters. There is a deeply incised tendril pattern on it, which is characteristic of Gotland . The garbled text reads: "These runes in". The Mervalla runestone refers to places near Daugmale.
Today the square is damaged by erosion and the construction of the hydroelectric power station.
