David A. Grimaldi

David A. Grimaldi (born September 22, 1957 ) is an American entomologist and paleontologist . He is the curator of insects at the American Museum of Natural History .

Life

Grimaldi graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in biology and art in 1979, from the State University of New York at Binghamton with a master's degree in evolutionary biology in 1983, and received his PhD in entomology from Cornell University in 1986 . From 1986 he was assistant curator, from 1991 associate curator and from 1996 curator at the American Museum of Natural History. From 1994 to 1999 he was head of the entomology department. From 1994 he was Adjunct Professor at Cornell University and from 1995 at Columbia University . He is also a professor at the American Museum of Natural History's Gilder Graduate School.

He deals with the evolution of insects, fossilization in amber , the systematics of Drosophila flies and other two-winged birds , the evolution of biosystems (especially tropical rainforests), the evolution of insect pollination and phytophagy .

A number of insect species have been named in his honor.
