David Avidan ( Hebrew דוד אבידן; * 1934 in Tel Aviv ; † May 11, 1995 ibid) was an Israeli "poet, painter, filmmaker, publicist, playwright" (in his own words).

David Avidan was, along with Jehuda Amichai and Nathan Sach , one of the three prominent Israeli poets of the 1950s and 1960s who spoke Hebrew as their mother tongue.

Avidan studied literature and philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (without a degree).

Avidan's first book, "Cocks Without Lips" (Hebrew: "ברזים ערופי שפתיים") from 1954, received poor reviews from most critics. The first good review was written by Gabriel Moked, who later became one of his closest friends. His most famous book was "Something for someone" (Hebrew: "משהו בשביל מישהו") from 1964.
