David C. Berliner

David C. Berliner (* 1938 ) is an American psychologist specializing in educational psychology . He was Professor and Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education at Arizona State University from 1997 to 2010

Berliner received a doctorate in educational psychology from the Stanford Graduate School of Education and received several honorary doctorates, including from the University of Massachusetts Amherst .

Berliner published more than 200 articles and books, including the bestseller The Manufactured Crisis (with BJ Biddle) and six editions of Pedagogical Psychology . His attempt to develop his university department in Arizona into a leading educational science institute in the USA failed because of the finances and his critical attitude towards Arizona school policy .

Berliner was the president of the American Educational Research Association and the Educational Psychology Department of the American Psychological Association . Berliner is another Regents' Professor Emeritus of Education at Arizona State University.

Berliner examined the biographical development of teachers, distinguishing between different stages from 'novice' to 'expert', which were further developed in Germany by Rainer Bromme .
