David Dawson (choreographer)

David Dawson (born March 4, 1972 in London ) is a British ballet dancer and choreographer .

Live and act

David Dawson trained as a ballet dancer at the Rona Hart School of Dance, the Arts Educational School and the Royal Ballet School in London. In 1991 he won the Professional Level Prize of the Prix ​​de Lausanne and then danced in the ensemble of the Birmingham Royal Ballet (1991–1994), the English National Ballet (1994–1995) and the Het Nationale Ballet , Amsterdam (1995–2000), where also his first choreographic works were created. In 2000 he switched to Ballet Frankfurt, where he danced as principal soloist for another two years under the direction of William Forsythe .

In 2002 he ended his active dance career and has since worked exclusively as a choreographer. From 2004 to 2006 he created several pieces for the ensemble of the Het Nationale Ballet in Amsterdam, including The Gray Area , for which he was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse for best choreographer. In 2005 he was the first English choreographer to receive an invitation from the renowned Russian Mariinsky / Kirov Ballet to create a piece for their ensemble ( Reverence ) and was honored with the Golden Mask , Russia's highest theater award , for this work . During his activity as resident choreographer of the Semperoper Ballett Dresden from 2006 to 2009 he created with his reinterpretation of Giselle u. a. his first narrative ballet.

In September 2010 Dawson was appointed resident choreographer of the Royal Flanders Ballet in Antwerp.
