David Island is an island off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land , which is characterized by rocky outcrops on its north and east flanks. It lies across the Davis Peninsula in the middle of the Shackleton Ice Shelf .
It was discovered in November 1912 by the team of the west base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named it after his mentor Edgeworth David (1858-1934), who had participated with him on the Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909) and was now a member of the advisory board of Mawson's expedition.
