David C. Korten (* 1937 in Longview , Washington ) is an American author and globalization critic .

Korten graduated from Longview's RA Long high school in 1955. Korten received the MBA and Ph.D. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business . In the Vietnam War he served as a captain in the US Air Force . After the war he was a professor at Harvard University . He later worked for US development aid in Asia for several years. In 1990 he founded the People-Centered Development Forum together with others and became its president.

Korten uses two models to describe the relationship between humans and the earth, the “cowboy” and the “ spaceship ” model. According to the “cowboy” model, most people regard the earth as an inexhaustible reservoir of raw materials to supply the human species and that these resources are constantly being renewed. In reality, according to Korten, the earth is more like a "spaceship" in which the resources are much more limited and in which humans must continuously strive to actively renew and maintain them.
