Matthias Garbitius
Matthias Garbitius (also Matthias Illyricus ; * around 1505 in Istria , † 1559 in Tübingen ) was a German classical philologist .
Life
Born in what was then Illyria , he came to Nuremberg , where he was accepted by Joachim Camerarius the Elder and taught the Greek language at the Aegidianum . He then studied at the University of Heidelberg and moved to the University of Wittenberg on May 6, 1534 . Here he found his teachers in Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon and in September 1534 obtained the academic degree of a master's degree . On September 13, 1537 he was appointed professor of the Greek language at the philosophical faculty.
In the same year he switched to Melanchthon's intercession as a professor at the University of Tübingen , where he also took over the professorship of Greek. Because of his evangelical sentiments, he had to put up with professional criticism at a church visit in Tübingen. Nevertheless, he remained in office until the end of his life.
