David L. Jones

David Lloyd Jones (* 1944 in Victoria ) is an Australian biologist. He mainly deals with Australian orchids , their pollination mechanisms and systematics. Its botanical author abbreviation is " DLJones ".

Jones studied horticulture at Burnley Horticultural College and agriculture at Melbourne University . After graduating, he worked for 14 years at a horticultural research facility in the state of Victoria. In the late 1960s he opened a nursery in Montrose , which he ran with his wife. In 1978 they moved operations to Currumbin Valley . 1987 Jones received a research position at the Australian National Botanic Garden in Canberra .

Jones was a founding member of the Victoria Group of the Australasian Native Orchid Society in 1968 . In 1969 he edited the volume Orchids of Australia together with Bruce Muir , based on the texts and watercolors by WH Nicholls '. In 1973 he first described a new species of orchid, Corybas hispidus . In his nursery he sold numerous species of Australian orchids. In 1988 his book Native Orchids of Australia came out, from this time onwards he could also work professionally with researching Australian orchids.

Jones is considered one of the best experts on the Australian orchid flora through numerous excursions. He expanded the herbarium collection at the Canberra Botanical Gardens. In addition to his publications, he has also made over 2000 botanical illustrations.
