David Le Breton
David Le Breton (born October 26, 1953 ) is a French anthropologist and sociologist .
life and work
Le Breton is Professor of Sociology at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg .
In his research he deals on the one hand with the human body and its modes of representation and on the other hand with risk behavior. In his anthropology of pain, pain. A cultural history , Le Breton describes how different sociological, historical-anthropological, cultural, religious, philosophical, psychological and medical interpretations of pain led to different patterns of action, thus constructing the body in a certain way and integrating it into a symbolic order. The pain is "totalitarian" because it always absorbs the whole body, even if it comes from only one organ. In addition, it destroys our freedom and sovereignty, it drifts into solitude and is purely private, because empathy and knowledge are not possible with regard to pain.
