The David Livingstone Center is a museum in the Scottish town of Blantyre in the council area of South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The row of buildings called Shuttle Row was built around 1780. The 23 one-room apartments were rented. In 1813 the missionary and Africa explorer David Livingstone was born in one of the buildings. His parents worked at the nearby Blantyre Cotton Mill , where he too started his first job when he was ten. The entire building complex, which is located in a loop of the Clyde on the northern edge of Blantyre, has meanwhile been converted into a museum. It is operated on behalf of the David Livingstone Trust by the National Trust for Scotland in collaboration with the Government of South Lanarkshire. In 2015, Heritage Lottery Fund provided funding to restore and expand the facility.

exhibition

The museum deals thematically with the life of Livingstone. On the one hand, his early life is illuminated. The apartment in which Livingstone grew up with his parents has been restored and a model also shows the harsh working conditions under which Livingstone worked as a child on an industrial loom.

Other parts of the exhibition include Livingstone's African journeys. Both collected artifacts and private items from his expeditions are shown. In addition, the history of Livingstone's missionary work and his fight against the slave trade is discussed. The numerous scenes of his life on display include a statue depicting the attack of a lion on Livingstone. It is a donation from the animation technician Ray Harryhausen and his wife, who was Livingstone's great-granddaughter.
