David Macdonald (Composer I)

David Macdonald is an American composer and musicologist.

Macdonald first studied at St John's College and completed his master's degree at SUNY Purchase to do his PhD at the Manhattan School of Music . His teachers included Nils Vigeland , David Noon , Charles Jones and Joseph Webber . He attended master classes from Lukas Foss , George Crumb , Roger Reynolds and others.

Macdonald is co-director of the Locrian Ensemble for contemporary music, which also performs his compositions. Since 2001 he has been teaching music theory and history at the Manhattan School of Music.

He composed works for orchestra and for chamber ensembles. The Elements Quartet, The Queen's Chamber Band , the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet and Zero Gravity have commissioned him to compose. In 2007 his Make a Joyful Noise was performed by the Chappaqua Orchestra . Since the 1994/95 season he has been a free member of The Actors Company Theater (TACT) in New York , and has composed music for its performances ever since.
