David Marshall (politician, 1941)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Marshall (* 7. May 1941 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Marshall was born in Glasgow in 1941. He attended Larbert High School and Woodside Senior School in Glasgow. After finishing school, Marschall worked as a farmer, office worker and bus driver. He is married and has a daughter and two sons.

Political career

After Myer Galpern , who had represented the constituency of Glasgow Shettleston in the British House of Commons since 1959 , did not run for the 1979 general election, the Labor Party named Marshall as his successor. On election day he received 61.1% of the vote and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. He gave his maiden speech on May 23 of the same year. In the following elections in 1983 , 1987 , 1992 , 1997 and 2001 , Marshall defended his mandate.

As part of the constituency revision, Marshall's Glasgow Shettleston constituency was dissolved at the end of the electoral term. Marshall therefore applied for the mandate of the newly created constituency of Glasgow East in the 2005 general election . On election day he prevailed against four opponents and kept his parliamentary seat. In June 2008, Marshall announced his resignation for health reasons. On June 30 of the same year he was installed as Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead , an office without duties given to MPs with no right of resignation to allow them to withdraw from day-to-day politics.

Although Marshall was still able to win 60.7% of the vote for the Labor Party in the 2005 elections, his successor Margaret Curran missed the mandate. This was secured by SNP candidate John Mason . This result was viewed as a political disaster and a consequence of Gordon Brown's policies .
