David Martin (born August 26, 1954 in Edinburgh ) has been a MEP for the Labor Party for Scotland in the Socialist Group in the European Parliament since 1984 .

Career

David Martin was assistant to a stockbroker from 1970 to 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was active as an animal welfare activist. From 1982 to 1984 he was a member of the Lothian (Scotland) Regional Council . In 1984 Martin obtained a bachelor's degree in economics and in 1996 a master's in European law.

Politics and MP

David Martin is a longstanding member of the Unite and GMB trade unions. From 1987 to 1988 he was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party. Today he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Labor Party in Scotland.

Martin was elected to the European Parliament in 1984 from the Labor Party's national list . There he was deputy chairman of the Committee on Budgetary Control from 1984 to 1987 , and from 198 to 1988 he was deputy chairman of the Socialist Group. Martin was Vice-President of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2004 and a candidate for the office of President of Parliament in 2002. He was also the official rapporteur of the European Parliament more than 30 times.

Martin is currently a member of the Committee on International Trade , the Committee on Petitions and the Delegation for Relations with Australia and New Zealand . He is also an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council .

In the European elections in the United Kingdom on May 23, 2019 , Labor suffered a severe electoral defeat and lost its previous two Scottish seats in the European Parliament, including the seat of David Martin, who at the time was the longest-serving British MEP in the European Parliament . In one reaction, Martin Labour's election defeat was due to the “lack of a clear position on Brexit”. It should have been made clear that Labor was an remain party .
