David Stoll
David Stoll (born February 28, 1952 ) is an American anthropologist . He received his bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Michigan and received his masters and PhD from Stanford University .
In the 1980s and 1990s, Stoll spent a lot of time in Latin American countries such as Guatemala and Colombia , where his research work is also concentrated. Outside of professional circles, Stoll became known through his book Rigoberta Menchú and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans , which sparked a controversy that was featured prominently on the front page of the New York Times . Here Stoll points to inconsistencies between the results of his field work and statements in the memoir Yo, Rigoberta Menchú by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchú . Stoll also criticizes the interpretation of Menchú's story by many Western academics, as they would romanticize the guerrillas in Latin America.
