David Wooster (born March 13, 1711 in Stratford , † May 2, 1777 in Danbury ) was an American general of the American War of Independence .

Life

David Wooster was born in Stratford, Connecticut . He attended Yale College from 1735 to 1738 . On March 6, 1745, he married Marie Clapp, the daughter of the President of Yale Thomas Clapp . In the Seven Years' War in North America he served 1755-1761 in the State Militia of the Colony of Connecticut as a colonel . During the American Revolutionary War , he was named Brigadier General by Congress in 1775 . He was involved in the invasion of Canada (1775) . He was the military commander of the occupied city of Montreal . In 1776 he returned to Connecticut. He was seriously wounded in the Battle of Ridgefield on April 27, 1777, a skirmish between colonial militias and British forces returning from a raid on a colonial supply depot in nearby Danbury . He died at Dibble House in Danbury on May 2, 1777.
