De La Rue is a decayed whale plain, 136 km in diameter, on the northeastern edge of the moon's front . It is located north of the large Endymion crater and immediately south of the smaller but more noticeable Thales and Strabo craters . The wall is almost completely leveled and partially covered by newer craters.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the British astronomer Warren de la Rue . He appears on the cards of Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt under the name Epicurius .
