history

Since the turn of the millennium, PCM Uitgevers have been confronted with falling circulation of their newspapers, caused by new media such as the Internet and free newspapers. The Dutch offshoot of the Swedish free newspaper metro , which appeared for the first time in June 1999, and Sp! Ts , which was published at the same time, were able to establish themselves as major players on the market. PCM Uitgevers have now decided to also enter the free newspaper market.

The framework of a joint venture was chosen for the new newspaper, the other half of which was to be taken over by the investor Marcel Boekhoorn . PCM Uitgevers then changed their plans and finally decided on the telecommunications company KPN . In August 2006, Cornelis van de Berg, previously at metro and Wegener, presented Boekhoorn with a business plan for a free newspaper. Boekhoorn finally gave the green light and became an investor in the newspaper, while van den Berg became its editor. Ben Rogmans, who was appointed editor-in-chief in September 2006, was unable to take up his position immediately because of a competition clause from his former employer Wegener, where he was director of multimedia. Originally, due to a court order, he would have had to wait until October 2007, but Bogmans was finally able to get a job for the month of April on appeal.

The newspaper had been published since January 23, 2007 and was editorially managed by the deputy editors-in-chief until Bogmans took office. On June 23, 2007, a Saturday edition was published for the first time as a test, which was followed by another test edition on July 28. The Saturday edition has been published regularly since September 15th.

On March 12, 2012 the end of the daily newspaper was announced. Due to the deteriorating conditions in the advertising market, the publishers never succeeded in making the free newspaper profitable.
