Deadlands is a pen and paper role-playing game set in the Wild West and supplemented by undead , demons and other villains. It was designed by Shane Lacy Hensley, first published in 1996 by the Pinnacle Entertainment Group .

Control systems

Deadlands originally worked with many different playing dice and a poker -Set playing cards . Later the background was adapted as Deadlands d20 on the d20 system and as GURPS Deadlands on GURPS . Pinnacle released Deadlands: Reloaded in 2006 under its Savage Worlds system.

Game worlds

The Deadlands world is made up of several time periods:

  • Deadlands - The Weird West
  • Deadlands - Hell on Earth
  • Deadlands - Lost Colony

The Deadlands - The Weird West system is probably the most widespread . It is a Wild West scenario, which is set around the year 1876 during the American Civil War (the story has taken a slightly different turn in the game world of Deadlands). Elements of horror, steampunk and a gloomy atmosphere characterize the gaming experience. The game world is most similar to the scenario of the movie Wild Wild West .

In contrast, the scenario of Deadlands - Hell on Earth should be imagined as a game world based on Mad Max - a world after nuclear war, as it is portrayed in the film The Day After . However, this role-playing game system also contains many elements of the supernatural, which is characteristic of many pen & paper role-playing games . Hell on Earth ties in with the game world of Deadlands - The Weird West . In terms of time, the system is in North America in 2094 . Due to the game-determining element of survival in a post-nuclear, hostile world, this game world defines itself as a post-apocalyptic end-time scenario.

Deadlands - Lost Colony is set, like Deadlands - Hell on Earth, around the year 2094. People descended from Earth are the protagonists of the story. However, on an alien planet, which brings the aspect of science fiction into the world of Deadlands.

Overall, this role play system is mainly used in English-speaking countries. Some rulebooks / extensions, several dozen of which have appeared, have been translated into German and published by Spielzeit-Verlag. Since August 2009 Deadlands has been produced in Germany in cooperation with Spielzeit and Uhrwerk-Verlag.

Reloaded

In spring 2006, was published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group with Reloaded: Deadlands new version of Deadlands. The new versions of the other two lines Hell on Earth: Reloaded and Lost Colony: Reloaded have been announced but not yet released.

Reloaded updates the meta-plot of the individual settings (DL: R starts in 1879, for example) and modifies the rule system on Savage Worlds . Contrary to the previous Savage Worlds settings, DL: R will not contain a complete campaign, but only depict the world. It is therefore the first “Open Setting” from Savage Worlds. A plot point campaign, as is common in other Savage Worlds settings (for example 50Fathoms or Tour of Darkness ) is to follow. At which date it is not yet known.
