The Deane Winthrop House is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the state of Massachusetts and the one that has been continuously inhabited for the longest time in the United States . It is located near Boston in Winthrop at 40 Shirley Street. It is named after Deane Winthrop (1623–1704), the sixth son of John Winthrop (1588–1649, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1629 until his death) second governor of the colony. In 1990 it was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

history

The oldest part of the building, currently maintained by the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association , was built around 1675. The association expanded the barn in 2009 to accommodate artifacts and documents.

In 1637 the Town of Boston granted land to fifteen men at what was then Pullen Point . One of them was Captain William Pierce, a Puritan skipper and slave trader on the Mayflower . On February 26, 1638 John Winthrop noted that Pierce had returned from the West Indies on the ship Desire with slaves on board. He erected the first building at this point a little later. In 1647, Deane Winthrop bought the building and land, his father's and Pierce's plantation , and lived there with his wife Margaret Tyndal Winthrop until his death in 1704. He built the current building in the 1670s.

In 1696 the 6 * 8 m measuring one-room building was extended to the east, the chimney dates from the 1700s. It has not been rebuilt since then. Of the nine children of the Winthrops, four died. In his will, three slaves named "Marreat, Primas and a child named Robin" appear. Presumably they were also buried near the house, but no grave has yet been found. Deane's brother John († 1676) was long governor of the Connecticut colony .

In 1907 the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association bought the house. The outbuildings that had emerged over time were removed, the site leveled, and trees planted. Today the house is inhabited by Barbara and Patricia Harrison, who live there permanently and take care of the building.
