Deborah Birx Leah (* 4. April 1956 in Pennsylvania , USA ) is an American physician with a focus on HIV / AIDS - immunology , vaccine research and global health.

Awareness and outside the United States reached during the 19-pandemic COVID-in the United States as a White House coronavirus Response Coordinator of Donald Trump .

Career

In 1976 Birx received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Houghton College , and later studied medicine at Pennsylvania State University .

In 1985, Birx began a career with the United States Department of Defense as a military-trained immunology clinician with a focus on vaccine research against HIV / AIDS. From 1985 to 1989 she was deputy head of the hospital immunology service at the Walter Reed Military Hospital . From 1988 she worked closely with Robert Redfield as a research assistant  . From 1996 to 2005, Birx was the director of the US military HIV research program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research . In this role, Birx was involved in leading one of the most influential HIV vaccine studies (RV 144) that provided the first evidence of the potential effectiveness of a vaccine in preventing HIV infection. During this time she also rose to the rank of colonel . From 2005 to 2014 Birx was director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division for Global HIV / AIDS, which is part of that agency's Center for Global Health.

In 2014 she was named United States Global AIDS Coordinator by Barack Obama . Her role was to act as ambassador to help achieve the HIV prevention and treatment goals set by Obama in 2015 to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Trivia

During President Trump's regular press conferences , the brightly colored Birx scarves were widely discussed by many people and the media . Fans even set up their own Instagram account for the garments .

In early August 2020, Birx was criticized by US President Donald Trump for her warnings about the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States .
